The weight loss injection is a prescription medication that is used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to help adults with obesity or overweight achieve and maintain weight loss.

The initial consultation for the weight loss injection is a medical appointment with the doctor to discuss the use of the weight loss injection as a weight management treatment. During the initial consultation, the doctor will evaluate the patient’s medical history, current health status, weight management goals, and previous weight loss attempts. They will also assess whether Saxenda is a suitable treatment option based on factors such as the patient’s BMI (Body Mass Index) and overall health.

After the initial consultation is held you will be required to have a full set of bloods done.

Once you start the drug you will be required to have a monthly review visit.

Is the weight loss injection for me?

If you are struggling to lose weight and eating healthy and exercise isn’t helping the weight budge you should discuss the possibility of the weight loss injection with the doctor. However, you must meet the eligibility criteria. If you are not sure if you meet the criteria the initial consultation will determine this for you.

You cannot avail of the weight loss injection if you are pregnant or expecting to become pregnant.  

If you or any of your family have ever had MTC or if you have MEN 2.

If you have had a serious allergic reaction to liraglutide or any of the ingredients in the weight loss injection

Am I Eligible for the Weight Loss Injection?

The criteria for the weight loss injection are as follows;

• Adults with excess weight (BMI ≥27) who also have weight-related medical problems or obesity (BMI ≥30).
• Children aged 12-17 years with a body weight above 132 pounds (60 kg).

What are the Possible Side Effects of the Weight Loss Injection?

The most common side effects of the weight loss injection in adults include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, injection site reaction, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), headache, tiredness (fatigue), dizziness, stomach pain, and change in enzyme (lipase) levels in your blood. Additional common side effects in children are fever and gastroenteritis.
